ChrysalisPoem & cardboard cutouts – July 3rd 2026 A moth or butterfly at the stage of growth when it is turning into an adult and is enclosed in a hard case. A hard case that protects a moth or butterfly while it is turning into an adult.
A chrysalis is the pupal stage in the life cycle of a butterfly during which the larval body undergoes metamorphosis into its adult form. Enclosed within a hardened outer skin, the caterpillar enters a period of profound internal reorganization. Larval tissues dissolve, new structures emerge, and the adult body gradually takes shape, while the exterior remains almost unchanged.
The chrysalis occupies a peculiar position in the natural world. It is neither simply a protective shell nor merely a passage between two lives. It is a condition: one in which transformation unfolds over time, hidden from view, and in which the greatest activity coincides with the least visible movement. Its significance lies not only in what it will become, but in the duration of its invisible labour.
